A plain hearth might just look too plain. For a cozy and mossy fireplace in the living room cover a rug or mat over it. Besides protecting to the floor of the hearth from fire sparks, it acts as a decorative item too.

Hearthrugs and mats must be fireproof or fire-retardant. A typical hearthrug usually comes in a half circle shape. However, they are also available in rectangles, squares, ovals and other shapes.
Choose the right hearthrug to suit the décor of your living room and fireplace. Option for simple design and light colors ones, as they would suit any interior well. Keep in mind that the hearth is the focal point of the fireplace.
Coal and firewood stains on hearthrugs have to be brush off occasionally. Ensure that your rug doesn’t leave any stains behind after it is washed or brushed.
